INTRODUCTION
Soaps are the mixture of sodium, potassium salts of higher fatty acids. The higher fatty acids may be such as stearic acid (C17H35COOH), palmitic acid (C15H31COOH). These are obtained by the alkaline hydrolysis of oils and fats.

EXPERIMENT 01

To compare the foaming capacities of different samples of soap.

Apparatus required

 4 Beakers
 4 Test tubes
 4 Test tube stand
 Weight box
 Stop watch
 Glass rod colored

CHEMICALS REQUIRED
 Distilled water
 Given samples of soap

THEORY

There is no quantitative method for the determination of foaming capacity of soap. The foaming capacity of a soap sample depends upon the nature of soap and its concentration. This can be compared for various samples of soaps by taking the same concentrations of solution and shaking them. The foam is formed and the time taken for disappearance of foam in all cases is compared. The lesser the time taken by a solution for the disappearance of foam, the lower is its foaming capacity.

PROCEDURE

 4 samples of soap each of 1g weight were taken and samples were putted into 4 different beakers and the names were labeled on them.
 50 ml of distilled water in each beaker was added. The soap was dissolved in it with the help of glass rod.
 4 test tubes were placed in a test tube stand.
 1 ml of the soap solution prepared above was poured in the test tube of corresponding name.
 10 ml of distilled water in each test tube was added. Then test tubes were shaken vigorously for 5 min. and a stop watch was started.
 Time taken for disappearance was noted for each 1 g sample.
